3/18/2021 - ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Elizabeth City Composite Squadron NC-305 Cadet C/Lt Col Ronald “Beau” Smith has been appointed to attend the United States Air Force Academy. C/Lt Col Smith is the Cadet Commander of Elizabeth City Composite Squadron NC-305, “Wild Eagles”, where he has been a volunteer since 2015.  His mother, Capt Mechell Smith DNP, is the Deputy Commander for Cadets and Medical Officer for the local unit. Cadet Smith is the senior ranking of 16 cadets in this squadron.

C/Lt Col Smith is a senior at Northeast Academy for Aerospace and Advanced Technologies (NEAAAT). He is an Eagle Scout and member of Order of the Arrow. As senior cadet for a CAP squadron, he sets the example for other cadets’ Leadership, Aerospace Education, Fitness and Character Development. C/Lt Col Smith has been awarded the CAP Emergency Services Patch and Basic Ground Team Badge. A graduate of a 2019 CAP National Flight Academy, he recently achieved his FAA Pilot Certificate. He was promoted to his current grade in October 2020 when he was awarded the Gen Ira C Eaker Award, one of only seven North Carolina cadets to have received this in 2020.

Nominated by Congressman Greg Murphy M.D. and both Senators Thom Tillis and Richard Burr, C/Lt Col Smith was congratulated on his nomination at a ceremony hosted by Doctor Murphy earlier this month. 1st Lt Ken King, Commander of NC-305, stated that “Cadet Smith is an example of disciplined volunteer service with integrity for all cadets in our Squadron. Beau is the third cadet from this squadron in the last eight years to receive a military academy appointment. Previous appointees were JadeAnn Miller (USN) and Riaz Lane (USA).”
