April 7, 2021- Just over 80,000 vaccines later, the COVID-19 vaccination site in Greensboro, North Carolina is still going strong. The North Carolina Emergency Management Division, in conjunction with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Health and Human Services, the Air Force, and the North Carolina Army National Guard, has been operating this multi-POD (point of distribution) vaccination site since mid-February, and is still in full swing.

Each day, this site utilizes more than five distribution points and countless dedicated members of various federal, state, and local agencies to vaccinate thousands of people per day against the COVID-19 virus. Of these various organizations, Civil Air Patrol is one of the few that has continuously provided support from its corps of volunteers since day one. Working closely with North Carolina Emergency Management, Civil Air Patrol has been able to provide daily support for everyone taking part in this momentous effort, providing logistical ground support to ensure that everything runs smoothly and continuously.

Civil Air Patrol’s contribution to this effort has included at least 60 dedicated members from both North Carolina Wing and Virginia Wing, many of whom have served multiple days and at multiple sites since the beginning. Putting aside their personal lives and work schedules, these members have selflessly worked to improve the lives of the more than 80,000 Americans that have come through, to do their part, to strengthen the resiliency of their community, state, and nation in the face of this pandemic. Each member of CAP, regardless of rank or position, has demonstrated the four Core Values of CAP, integrity, volunteer service, excellence, and respect, helping to serve Americans, regardless of their personal life circumstances. Among the dedicated volunteers, Col Angelovich, the Commander of North Carolina Wing Civil Air Patrol, has stepped out to serve in this time of need, stating “Everyone out here has done a remarkable job, and I’m very thankful for the members contributing their time and effort to support this very important mission.”  From day one, North Carolina Wing members Lt Col Dennis Bissell, Lt Col Richard Tedesco, and Maj Tim Bagnell were instrumental in laying down the framework and providing the continuity for Civil Air Patrol’s role at the Greensboro Vaccination Site.

In addition to volunteers from North Carolina, Virginia Wing Civil Air Patrol has been instrumental in continuously staffing the Greensboro Vaccination Site, providing personnel to augment the CAP resources available on site. In addition, South Carolina Wing has also supplemented our team, supporting sites along the North Carolina/South Carolina border. On top of the time they’ve put in at Greensboro, some of the Virginia Wing members have volunteered to serve at other sites that North Carolina Wing needed help to fill. Virginia Wing members Maj Rose Reeder, 1st Lt Brian Morris, and SM Stephen Littlewood, among others, have been extremely flexible, reorganizing their personal lives to drive multiple hours to vaccination sites throughout NCWG, helping to ensure the continuous staffing of these sites.

North Carolina Wing will continue to support the Greensboro Vaccination Site, as well as other sites throughout the state, for as long as is needed, and will undoubtedly continue to count on its sister Wings, Virginia and South Carolina for support in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.
