C/2d Lt Tyler Moore was recently recognized at a special promotion ceremony at the 111th Search and Rescue Composite Squadron for achieving one of the most prestigious honors that a cadet in Civil Air Patrol can earn in the cadet program. The Billy Mitchell Award is one of the five milestone awards a cadet can earn as they progress in the cadet program. More than 25 of his fellow squadron members, friends and family watched on as he was presented by North Carolina Wing Vice Commander West, Lt Col Jeff Focke with his achievement certificate.

After progressing from Cadet Airman Basic through Cadet Chief Master Sergeant, C/2d Lt Tyler Moore now begins his progression into the officer grades. In order to receive his promotion, Moore was required to pass a course of study that emphasized leadership, character development, responsibility and physical fitness. Less than 15 percent of all CAP cadets earn the grade of second lieutenant.

The Billy Mitchell Award is the second of five milestone awards that Civil Air Patrol cadets can earn. Named for the groundbreaking aviation pioneer, cadets who earn the award must live up to General Billy Mitchell’s standards of excellence and earn the grade of Cadet Second Lieutenant. Achievement of this milestone award requires successful completion of leadership and aerospace exams, a rigorous physical fitness test and demonstration of leadership abilities including principles of officership and the responsibilities of command.

C/2d Lt Tyler Moore is a senior at Bradford Preparatory School and joined the 111th Search and Rescue Composite Squadron in February 2018.
